Galey Media > Carl Wells of Valentine, Nebraska, was kind enough to share this great photograph of the Whitney 4-H Band. It was taken in the school basement in about 1951. Carl identifies those in the photo (left-to-right) as: Vernon Cullers, Louella Straub, John Couch, Mary Jane Wright, Joann Blust, and the Wright twins -- Ruth and Ruby (or Ruby and Ruth?); in front are Lois Kendrick, Mitzi Grant, Bill Connell, Dick Kendrick, Larry Baldwin, Reverend V.C. Henry (leader), Toni Grant, Kenny Cullers, John Stumpf, Karyl Kendrick and Carl Wells. To see a larger image, click on the photo.
Galey Media > Thanks to Bob and Ruth Ann Connell for sharing this undated photo. It's probably an anniversary celebration for the Warring Memorial Methodist Church.

Seated (left-to-right) are: Paul Stump, Myrtle Stewart, Jennie Lawrence, Percy Cartwright, Mrs. Sue Burkitt, Olivia Thomas, and Mrs. Jim Scofield. Standing are: William Howard, Blanche Hartman, Josephine Hamm, LaRue Norman, Esther Lightbody, and Ruth Lawrence. The lady and gentleman at the far right are not identified.

Galey Media > This photograph of the Whitney Community Band was taken in the Crawford (Nebr) City Park in about 1920. Standing, left-to right: Band Director Mr. Bootier, Joel Burkitt, Art Sheldon, Ray Hitchcock, Elmo Brobst, John Blust, Henry Hetrick, George Barnum, Rupert Spearman, Theodore Nelson, Harry Norman, Louis Seymour, Leslie Hitchcock, and Oscar Johnson. In front are George Caswell, Eber Copper, and Bill Townsend. Not in the picture, according to a newspaper caption, were Percy Cartwright and Cal Norman. Galey Media > This photo submitted by Sam Couch says "Main Street in the 1920s." It has a more panoramic view than the cropped version elsewhere in this gallery. We've since heard from Kris Mader, who lives in the "Cartwright building," which is the two-story white house in the middle of this photograph. It was the diamond-shaped upstairs window that made the building readily identifiable. With this bit of information, it is clear that the photo was taken looking north-northwest, with the restaurant and old bank buildings at the far right of the picture. That would be on the west side of Missouri Street, which runs left-to-right in this photograph. Thanks to Kris Mader for the tip!
Galey Media > This is the old Whitney School building as it looked about 1921. The structure was located in the northwest part of the village -- not far from the site of the present Whitney School. Sam Couch included this photograph in a presentation he put together some years ago when he taught at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
Galey Media > Downtown Whitney in the 1920s. Perhaps someone can identify a few of these gents, who appear to be having a fine time relaxing in front of what I believe was a cafe next to the Farmers and Drovers State Bank. Most other pictures of the bank building show a rounded decal saying "Farmers and Drovers State Bank." This one appears to be perfectly horizontal. Perhaps it was changed with a broken window -- or the logo simply changed. In any event, we thank Sam Couch for sending us this photo.
Galey Media > Okay....I think this is a Schmill boy at left, with Albert and Fred Miller. Although the photograph is undated, it was probably taken in the early 1930s in Whitney.
Galey Media > These gentlemen are not identified. They appear to be inspecting the sugar beets arriving at the Whitney beet dump in about 1927.
Galey Media > This appears to be an "AFTER" photograph, taken subsequent to the activation of the diversion pipeline carrying water from White River to Whitney Lake.
